Boston Cyclist Union Still Fighting For Improvements To Longfellow

Anyone who has ridden over the new Longfellow bridge knows…its not good.  Even with the new “improvements” it still is pretty bad, especially considering how much better it could be.  But the BCU and a lot of other people are STILL FIGHTING!

It’s been more than a month since you’ve received an update on the Longfellow, and a lot has happened!

The Boston City Council unanimously passed a resolution last month endorsing our proposed striping design, joining the Cambridge City Council, which passed a similar resolution in April. Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone and Rep. Mike Capuano also endorsed the plan, with Capuano writing to MassDOT, “…the Boston Cyclists Union raises legitimate concerns, and I urge MassDOT to address them.”

Responding to mounting pressure and working with advocates, MassDOT has already committed to several safety improvements we have been asking for. This includes reducing the speed limit to 25 miles per hour, and installing a speed feedback board; narrowing inbound travel lanes by a total of one foot, while widening the bike lane from 5.5’ to 6.5’; installing flex posts on the inbound and outbound sides to physically separate cyclists from moving car traffic; and adding signage directing large vehicles to use the left inbound lane, to give additional comfort to cyclists in the bike lane. All of these changes to the original design are slated for completion in the first week of June.

These are all welcome changes that will make the bridge dramatically safer than it would have been under MassDOT’s original plan. We applaud MassDOT for listening to and heeding the voices of so many cyclists, advocates and elected officials, and for showing a commitment to working with us toward a safer solution.

What’s more, MassDOT is not done making improvements to the bridge. After hearing from us, many of you, and other stakeholders who have engaged with them over the past few months asking for safety upgrades to the bridge’s design, MassDOT is working hard to respond to our concerns. Yesterday, MassDOT met with stakeholders, who have engaged over the past few months with safety concerns over the bridge design, to discuss future plans to make the bridge even safer. Secretary Pollack committed to working with stakeholders to run a pilot on the inbound side of the bridge, testing out the narrowing of the bridge to one lane for cars with a wider, separated bike lane that would allow safe passing. We’ll be looking to you to give feedback as this change happens, to help secure the safer, wider lane permanently, so please continue to follow the progress and be in touch with us!

This is a huge victory, and it would not have been possible without you showing up and speaking up. Whether you canvassed for signatures, signed our petition online or in person, emailed or called your state rep or city councilor — YOU made a difference and are impacting a decade-old decision that many felt was unchangeable. We are accomplishing the impossible, all because we stood together to ensure MassDOT listened. This is our collective strength in action.

We look forward to seeing this project progress. We hope the flex posts and other design changes make you feel safer when the bridge reopens to full beneficial use, and we are eager to see what further improvements we can achieve by continuing to work together. Momentum is on our side.

CELEBRATE BIKE TO WORK DAY WITH MAYOR WALSH AND BLUE BIKES!

Register now for Boston’s National Bike to Work Day Festival on Friday May 18, the City’s annual celebration of bicycling hosted by the Boston Transportation Department!

This year, Mayor Walsh will be joined by Andrew Dreyfus, the President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, to celebrate the rebranding of our public bike share system as Blue Bikes. The new brand recognizes Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts as the new title sponsor of the publicly-owned system, which we’re expanding this year.

You can join one of a dozen bike convoys at stops all across the Boston area or ride over on your own. When you arrive at City Hall Plaza, you’ll be greeted by bike-friendly exhibitors and free breakfast provided by Clif Bar, High Brew Coffee, Iggy’s Bread of the World, and Whole Foods – Charles River Plaza. You must pre-register for the event in order to be eligible to receive a limited edition 2018 Bike to Work Day shirt. Shirts will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Blue Bikes members can receive Blue Bikes sunglasses. Registration, a map of the convoys, and other event details can be found at boston.gov/bike-to-work-day.

LEARN TO RIDE AT A WOMEN’S LEARN-TO-RIDE CLINIC

Are you a Boston resident who identifies as female or gender-nonconforming? Do you want to learn to ride a bike or sharpen existing bike skills? If so, you’re invited to participate in the Boston Transportation Department’s free clinics. The “Basic Skills” clinics are for you if you’ve never ridden a bike before, haven’t been on a bike for years, or can ride a little but need to build basic skills like starting, stopping, turning, and hand signaling. “Intro to Street Skills” clinics are for you if you have the basics down, but want to build your confidence riding on the street. Pre-registration is required for all clinics. Bikes and helmets are provided upon request. Find more information at boston.gov/women-bike.

LEARN ABOUT BIKE SHARE AT A BOSTON BY BIKE(SHARE) RIDE

Are you a resident of Boston who is interested in the region’s public bike share system but haven’t yet tried it out? Join one of four Boston by Bike(share) events hosted by the Boston Transportation Department this year. These events are a great way to try bike share for free and learn more about the different membership options available. An experienced ride leader will take you on a group bike ride through the neighborhood, traveling along comfortable on- and off-street routes. Helmets will be provided and participants should be a minimum of 16 years old. Information about our Boston by Bike(share) events can be found at boston.gov/bikes.

RIDE CONNECT HISTORIC BOSTON WITH US

Connect Historic Boston (CHB) is an initiative between the City of Boston and the National Park Service to link historic sites through downtown Boston. While construction on the full project continues, the Boston Transportation Department will be able to take people on a ride of the substantially-complete bike trail.

Meet us on June 22 at 5:30 pm at South Station. We’ll ride along the CHB Trail, and make a few stops along the way to discuss the project. The ride will take approximately one hour and will end near a Red Line T stop.

Don’t have a bike? A limited number of Blue Bikes (formerly known as Hubway) will be available. Please be sure to register if you want to ride a Blue Bike. Registration is optional for riders who have their own bikes, but does help us in planning. All riders will need to sign a waiver. Helmets will be required.

New York City to allow pedal-assist e-bikes, bans throttled bikes

NEW YORK (BRAIN) — Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced that the city will allow use of pedal-assist e-bikes, but will continue to ban throttled e-bikes that are capable of speeds above 20 mph.  The state of New York does not regulate e-bikes, which remain technically illegal to use in the state, although legislation is pending in Albany. Last year de Blasio launched a campaign to crack down on e-bikes in the city, particularly throttled bikes used by delivery workers. But now he said he has instructed the city transportation department to begin the rule making process to allow pedal assist bikes

Ogden, Utah, to host European trade mission

OGDEN, Utah (BRAIN) — This community north of Salt Lake City, which is home to a growing number of bike and outdoor industry companies, is hosting a trade mission from the European Commission later this month, in an effort to attract more outdoor companies to do business in the area. Ogden is working with the EU4SportsClusters Alliance, a project co-financed by the European Commission, to bring in representatives Sept. 17-20.

Seattle shop damaged in early morning blast

SEATTLE?(BRAIN) — G&O Family Cyclery, a three-year-old shop that specializes in cargo and family transportation bikes, was damaged by an early morning blast that destroyed three adjacent businesses in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood. The initial blast was behind a coffee shop next door to the shop and was apparently the result of a gas main leak. Store co-founder?David Giugliano (better known in the neighborhood as? Davey Oil) told BRAIN on Wednesday morning that he had not yet been allowed to enter the shop, but that the structure appeared to be damaged and perhaps will have to be leveled.
